The first documentary reference to Ábalos appears in the Chronicon Albeldensis and describes the expulsion of the Moors in 740 by Alfonso I of Asturias. Between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries, the documentary sources on Ábalos focus on the chapel of San Felices, owned by a series of heirs who bequeathed their part to the monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla. In 1397, King Charles III of Navarre, "the Noble", gave the area to Ruiz López Davalos.
