Inscribed in a large circular medallion, the Catalan flag is the only unmistakable symbol on the stairway.The serpent bellow the flag allows, in contrast, various interpratations: for some, it represents health, given that it appears in the symbol of medicine. Other theories suggest that the serpent (whose tails reappears behind the dragon on the upper fountain) could be Nejustan, the bronze reptile that Moses put on his staff to ward off poisonous species in the desert. Moreover it could also symbolize the extensive shape of the Crown of Aragón and its territories in the Mediterranean
