Close to the alcázar of the Catholic kings and at the end of the calle Cairuán, rises the Puerta de Almodóvar, known during Muslim times as Bad-al-Chawz or the Walnut Gate. This is the only entrance to the wall Arab enclosure that’s still preserved today. It was restores in the 19th century, preserving the merlons and walkways behind the parapets. We can enter the Jewish quarter from here.
The Puerta de Almodóvar is made out of masonry stonework with pieces of sandstone. It is structured around an opening and flanked by two prismatic towers joined together like a bridge with a pointed arch that develops into a barrel vault inside. This arch in the façade is framed by a Moorish panel called an Alfiz.
