Porta Romana is one of the oldest ports in the walls of Siena .
It was started in 1328 with Agnolo di Ventura and Agostino di Giovanni , in 1447 was commissioned by Giovanni Stefano said Sassetta painting that was meant to adorn with the representation of the Virgin , like the other city gates, to implore the divine protection of the city .
The artist's death, three years later, the work was carried out by Sano di Pietro that ended in 1466 . The representation is extended with a glory of angels under the arch and the ' Coronation of the Virgin in the great central and in 1978 for the advanced degradation of the frescoes were removed and transferred to the Basilica of San Francesco
