This is a masterpiece of so called 'Amsterdamse School', early 20th century. It used to be the proud office of six Amsterdam shipping companies. It was used for some time by the GVB, the Amsterdam public transport systme. Now it houses a 5 star de luxe hotel, the Grand Hotel Amrāth Amsterdam Architect both external as internal was (a.o) J.M. van der Mey: see --- http://www.bmz.amsterdam.nl/adam/nl/bouwm/mey.html -- I tried to give a report of an exursion we had in (and out of) this building. It did really much impress me. In my eyes this one of the most pure Amsterdam School buildings in the capital. There is a perfect harmony between the (richly ornamented) outside and the even more impressive inside, Several stained glass windows, all related to the shipping companies. East Indies, former Dutch colony plays a big role here.
