The Volyn Upland makes the north-western spurs of the larger Volyn-Podil Upland. It is the region just at the Polish-Ukrainian border.
It is a hilly land with mainly rural population; major economic activity - agriculture with sugar beets, rye, wheat and corn fields. There are small coalfields being exploited in s.w part of the upland.

ZYMNE - SVIATOGIRSKYI ASSUMPTION MONASTERY - the oldest Orthodox monastery in Volynia.

According to a legend, the Prince Volodymyr founded it by erecting a prince residence with temples in the village of Zymne in 1001. On the mountain top he built a temple honouring the assumption of Mary and at the foot of the mountain there was constructed the Holy Trinity temple. At the place of the ancient Church of Assumption, the Prince Fyodor Mykhailovych Chartoryiskyi built the grand Holy Assumption Cathedral (Sviato-Uspenskyi Sobor) in 1495. Next to the temple there is a preserved stone building with 7 cells, which is called "Chamber of Saint Volodymyr". Not far away from the Holy Trinity Church, there's an entrance to the caves that run beneath the Holy Assumption Cathedral and resemble those of Kyiv Pechersk. The main relic of the monastery is considered the Wonder-Working Icon of Zymne Lord's Mother with which the Constantinopole patriarch Mykolai II Hryzoverg blessed the marriage of the Great Prince Volodymyr Sviatoslavovych with the Greek Tsarina Anna.

VOLODYMYR-VOLYNSKYI - Polish: Włodzimierz Wołyński, Russian: Владимир-Волынский

It is a historic city located in the what is now Volyn Oblast (province), in north-western Ukraine.
The city is located in the historic region of Volhynia, on the right bank of the Luha River, 15 km from the border with Poland . Volodymyr-Volynsky, one of the oldest cities not only in Ukraine, but of all Europe, was the first capital of the powerful Volyn- Galician Kingdom, and a center of chronicle writing and icon painting. It was established in 981 by the Grand Prince Volodymyr, the Baptizer of Kyivan Rus.
In the 1300s, Metropolitan Theognostus of all Rus' resided in the city for several years before moving to Moscow. The city was a part of Poland from 1569-1795 and 1919-1939. Austrian authorities referred to it as Lodomeria.
The current estimated population is around 38,000 (as of 2004). 5 km south from Volodymyr is Zymne, with the oldest Orthodox monastery in Volynia.
