Cathedral In Gravina In Puglia

Gravina In Puglia, Apulia, Southern Italy

In the altar of Saint Francis of Paola, there is a glass case containing relics of Santa Ciriaca.
She was a Roman virgin and martyr, living at the beginning of 3rd century.
Enclosed in a sealed case, the remains of the saint were reassembled and modeled in wax until they resumed their human features.
The design was by the neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova.
The relic arrived in Gravina in 1815.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta – built by the Normans in 11th-12th centuries - is one of the most important monuments of Gravina.
Destroyed by fires and earthquakes in the mid-15th century, it was refurbished in Renessaince - Romanesque style.
It houses a splendid reliquary of an arm of the English saint Thomas Becket (1119-1170).
In August 1993 Pope John Paul II granted Gravina Cathedral the status of a minor basilica.
