The Cathedral in Gravina has three naves with two orders of 14 mazzaro columns, seven on each side, with bases and capitals in Doric and Ionic style.
Each one is different of from the other.
Above the central nave there is an amazing ceiling, executed in 1686 to 1723.
It preserves five large canvases (1691) by Gravinese painter Carlo Tucci.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta – built by the Normans in 11th-12th centuries - is one of the most important monuments of Gravina.
Destroyed by fires and earthquakes in the mid-15th century, it was refurbished in Renessaince - Romanesque style.
It houses a splendid reliquary of an arm of the English saint Thomas Becket (1119-1170).
In August 1993 Pope John Paul II granted Gravina Cathedral the status of a minor basilica.
