Fresco Of Pythagoras In The Benedictine Abbey In Montescaglioso

Montescaglioso, Basilicata, Southern Italy

The Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo is famous for housing a 17th century, rare historical fresco of Pythagoras.
The fresco is in the library and honors the philosopher's profound historical ties to the neighboring town - Metaponto where he established his philosophical school in nearby Metaponto, and where he spent his final years.
The library of the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo is located on the upper floor of the 11th century Benedictine complex.
It is part of the extensive upper-floor renovations, which include a 16th to 17th century fresco cycle featuring saints, theological virtues and classic philosophers.
