Miglionico - Basilica Of Santa Maria Maggiore

Miglionico, Basilicata, Southern Italy

The historic pipe organ dates from the beginning of the 17th century and contains 321 pipes.
The oldest structural parts of it, though, date back to 1479.
The church roof previously collapsed over the organ, leaving it exposed to harsh weather conditions.
In 1994, Fratelli Ruffatti firm completed a succesful historical restoration, bringing the instrument back to life.

The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, also known as the church of San Francesco, is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Constructed in the 12th century, the church exemplifies Romanesque architecture typical of medieval southern Italy.
The church has been a Pontifical Basilica since 1051 and served as a cathedral for several centuries.
Inside, we can see several old paintings and sculptures.
