Porto Cristo is a natural harbor and charming little fishing town in the eastern region of Mallorca.
Once a fairly busy port servicing the nearby town of Manacor, Porto Cristo is now a tranquil holiday resort.
The town was named during the Christian re-occupation of the island in 1260 AD and means ‘Port of Christ’.
Legend tells of a boat which was found washed-up on the beach which contained a crucifix.
There is also a story of an ox which was found wandering in the town bearing a symbol of Christ which refused to move along.
Locals obviously saw this as a sign and so named the town Porto Cristo.
Today Porto Cristo still retains the charm of its historic origins with ancient stone houses, sparkling white villas and the flotilla of boats in the harbor.
