Gorg Blau is an artificial reservoir on the creek Torrent del Gorg Blau, created in the 1970s, when the dam was constructed on the mountain river.
First, in 1906, a hydroelectric plant was constructed.
It is located in Tramuntana Mountains, in the valley between Puig Major and Puig de Massanella, the two highest peaks on the island of Mallorca.
Since 1971, it has been used as a drinking water source for the city of Palma and surrounding areas.
Tramuntana Mountains - Serra de Tramuntana - is a mountain range running southwest–northeast which forms the northern backbone of the Spanish island of Mallorca.
It is almost 90 km long and stretches from Andratx in the southwest to the Cap de Formentor in the far north of the island.
On 27 June 2011, the Tramuntana Range was awarded World Heritage Status by UNESCO as an area of great physical and cultural significance.
The highest peak is the Puig Major, which at 1,436 meters, is the highest mountain in the Balearic Islands.
