The medieval port crane (in Polish Żuraw) is the symbol of Gdansk and certainly the oldest surviving port crane in Europe.
It was built in the 14th century and renovated in 1442-1444, constructed with two brick towers, between which the wooden lifting mechanism was installed.
It was intended for four functions: to load cargo, to place masts on ships, as a defensive fortification and a city gate.
It was capable of lifting up to 2 tons to a height of 27 meters (90 feet)
Today it is home to a branch of the Maritime Museum.
