Humpel's Hut today known as Academic Thatch refuge (Strzecha Akademicka) is the second largest shelter in the Karkonosze (Giant Mountains). It is located in the middle of a broad ridge separating the Little Pond from the White Canyon, at an altitude 1,258 meters. Cold Meadow nearby is a good ski field.
The current hostel building was completed in 1907, on the place of the previous one, built in 1896 (which burned down on April 1, 1906). And even since 17th century there was a small shelter owned by the Humpel family. Owing to the tradition of filling in guest books in mountain huts, we know about the distinguished guests who visited the Giant Mountains, including Johan Wolfgang Goethe (in September 1790 ) and John Quincy Adams, future president of the United States.
The name "Academic Thatch" was established in the first years after World War II, when the building was owned by the students of University in Krakow.
