20060122 Consistency - The Ripon Hornblower

If you think PAD takes consistency and dedication, then how about this ...

In the year 886 (that's over 1,100 years ago!), King Alfred The Great visited the City of Ripon in Yorkshire and advised the townsfolk to protect themselves against the (pillaging, raping, burning) Vikings.

So they appointed a 'Wakeman' to stand guard every night. He would announce the start of his night vigile by blowing a cow-horn four times in the market square.
Then find the Mayor wherever he may be and report that the 'watch was set'.

Unbelievably, this routine has been enacted every single night at 9pm ever since! (that's 408,000 nights!!)
