so it's not a secret SP?
Guest 08-Jun-2007 22:54
Ouch. You would think he would have out grown this stage in his life.
Andrys Basten10-Jan-2007 03:59
Your subject title is hilarious. His left eye's wetness and the turndown on the left side
of his mouth are the only indicators any of this might be unpleasant, but maybe it was just
posing that discomforted him. Laser-like direct gaze also helps make it a stopper. I did wonder if he pulls some of them out at night, to sleep (or for intimate moments) and then
puts them back in the morning, like makeup ! Wow. Excellent job.

I've come back to this only just learning the story you tell us here. I still think it's amazing.
Richard Calmes12-Nov-2006 22:12
This is an eye stopper! V
Barbara Heide04-Nov-2006 22:35
love this portrait and the way he looks in the camera! cute capture...
snootydog04-Sep-2006 02:55
This is flat out awesome. The best part of it for me is the hint of dewiness in his left eye. It contrasts so perfectly with all the piercings. I just love this photo

Great capture- very interesting and certainly captures attention.
Gary Winters03-Feb-2006 07:59
This is simply a phenomenol image, with a fabulous subject, quite well photographed. He reminds me slightly of Anthony Hopkins.
Guest 08-Jan-2006 01:02
Excellent portrait of unique subject...I wonder how he could wear glasses?
scott clarke02-Jan-2006 21:14

noearlybird30-Oct-2005 03:07
And I've only had my ears pierced twice and that was it for me. This is gross. YOUR picture is awesome though.
Guest 14-Aug-2005 07:20
Oh my god!!! But the picture is just great!!!
Della Huff12-Aug-2005 18:46
John, this is such a FABULOUS street portrait and I admire your courage for asking him for a shot. I personally have to work on that. The focus and clarity are perfect, and the close crop is great for a portrait as intense as this one. Good thing he was squinting! Somehow it wouldn't be the same if he had a big cheesy smile :)
chrisso08-Aug-2005 01:45
Absolutely love this!!! Love the way you broke the frame on both top and bottom to really centre the focus on the eyes. There is a real connection and a funny sort of intimacy. The pearcings give it the up front bam but I think this would have been a great portrait even without it. You did a great job with the B&W conversion too...
Guest 06-Aug-2005 17:31
Somebody turn off that electro magnet!
Very nice portrait of this strange guy.
Phil06-Aug-2005 04:21

J. Scott Coile04-Aug-2005 21:23
Ouch... VOTE! Out of this world! Detail! Contrast and tones!
Clyne04-Aug-2005 13:32
I've come back to this image a couple of times. I just love it. I think he'd be a good subject without the metalwork but with it - wow - he's phenomenal! I love the tight crop, dof, and the expression (liked the explanation abt his glasses). And considering the lack of preparation you got a classic shot. Maybe sponteneity was the secret here. V.

Thanks John! Makes it even more fascinating knowing the story behind it!
JW04-Aug-2005 05:34
This shot came about when I was in a public park in Swindon which was holding the Swindon Mela. This guy was just sitting on a bench. Without the piercings his whole appearance was one of a maybe a middle aged teacher. He had gold rimmed spectacles on. I walked past him and then suddenly thought 'OMG that man has sooo many piercings' another couple of steps and I knew I had to get a picture. I am trying to force myself to take more street portraits anyway. So I turned round and asked him outright if I could. He smiled like a perfectly respectable guy and said that would be fine. But he was embarrassed (!) by his glasses which he took off quickly. So the secret of this picture is not that he is looking mean but mildly squinting!! My confidence with street portraiture is still not high enough to have spent time re-positioning and reposing him so this was the result which I am very happy with.

John, just spotted this amazing shot. Detail is superb. Like Fran, I'd like to know more. For example, did you spot him and ask if you could take the shot or (I notice the lens you used) did you just shoot!
Guest 03-Aug-2005 19:13
I'd love to know the story behind this one John! Great cropping on it as well - I like that you've gone for a horizontal format.
james200203-Aug-2005 12:03
Wouldn't want to walk next to him in an electrical storm. How can you even breathe with all that?
Jim
jude03-Aug-2005 10:00
Fantastic up-close and personal portrait. I LOVE that he's not a young man, yet he's done the piercing. Bet he has one hell of a personality because he doesn't give a rat's ass what anyone thinks..
Well done

I'd hate to be behind him at the airport metal detector. This is a great portrait.
JeremyGood01-Aug-2005 19:47
No offense, but I could only look at this for about a second before I had to scroll it off the page. It made me nauseous.

OMG...I just don't have words. I had my belly button pierced...thought I was gonna die! There's not enough alcohol on earth to get me to do this. I count at least 55...am I close?
