The only cottonwood tree for miles around is nurtured from a harsh environment by the cool, moist soil found in this unique, constricted sandstone alcove on the Utah/Arizona border.

It is as if the rock is deliberately sheltering the tree from the harsh elements, much like you would cupping your hands to light a match against the wind.
