Washington Arch, close up

In 1889, to celebrate the centennial of George Washington's inauguration as president, a large plaster and
wood memorial arch was erected at the northern entrance to Washington Square. The plaster and wood
arch was replaced three years later with a marble arch designed by the famed architect Stanford White.
