This is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Vientiane. Fashioned after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris,
it commemorates fallen heroes who fought for independence from France. It was built in 1969 with cement
purchased from the United States that was supposed to be used for the construction of a new airport.
