Inigo Jones

English architect of Welsh ancestry (1573-1652)

The Duke of Bedford asked Jones to build a square along the lines of an Italian piazza
but cautioned Jones to economize. For instance, the church should be simply a "barn".
Jones assured his lordship he'd build "the finest barn in Europe".
They're still there: the square is Covent Garden, the "barn" is St. Paul's.
