c. 1861 - Phryne, the courtesan

by Jean-Léon Gérôme

The Trial of Phryne is based on actual events that took place in Ancient Athens around 341 BCE.
She was on trial before the Court of Appeals. When it seemed the verdict would be unfavorable,
her lawyer, a former lover, removed Phryne's robe, thus stunning the judges with her beauty and
rendering them unable to condemn her, so she was acquitted.
