William Cullen Bryant

by Herbert Adams, 1911
Bryant, after whom the park was named in 1884, was a poet and, for years, editor of the New York Post.
He was a major force in the literary and political circles of 19th century New York. He crusaded on behalf
of the abolition of slavery, free trade, free speech, copyright laws and what was to become Central Park.
