Courtyard of Plymouth Church

In 1847, Henry Ward Beecher (pictured) became the minister of Plymouth Church. He was strongly opposed
to slavery (his sister Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote UNCLE TOM'S CABIN), and at the start the Civil War,
Beecher urged President Lincoln, who had visited the church, to issue a proclamation of emancipation.
