Hoi An was one of Southeast Asia's busiest ports in the 16th century when it was settled by Japanese and Chinese merchants. Remnants of the merchants’ influences can still be seen. There are a variety of different types of historical sites in the old town, their average age being 200 years, and many have been maintained close to their original form. It's no wonder that UNESCO has recognized the old town of Hoi An as one of four World Heritage sites in Vietnam.
