Hermits (Ruesee)

Actually called Rueseedudton, meaning hermit who massages himself, these sculptures on Khao Mor (rock gardens) in Wat Po demonstrate various stretching poses adapted from yoga positions practised by Indian hermits. This particular form of therapeutic exercise was used to cure royal courtiers of muscle ache and pain and reflect the medical science and knowledge of the Ayutthaya period (1350 to 1767) of old Siam.
