These are the mortuary temples at Deir el-Bahri of MENTUHOTEP II (c.2055 - C.2004 BC) the Eleventh Dynasty king who reunited EGYPT at the beginning of the Middle Kingdom and Queen HUTSHEPSUT (c.1473 - C.1458 BC) the female pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty. Queen HUTSHEPSUT was regent to TUTHMOSIS III and she ruled on his behalf for 7 years before proclaiming herself king and jointly ruling with him for a further 14 years. The temples are free standing and part cut into the rock. Pictures No 1207 to 2013 & 1225 show the small chapel to the south side of the main complex which is dedicated to the goddess Hathor. Picture 1208 is a column of a sistrum, the musical instrument sacred to Hathor. The column is the handle and is decorated with a Hathor head. The metal loop of the instrument is shown above the head.
