Buckfast Abbey

view map

The magnificent restored Cistercian abbey at Buckfastleigh on the edge of Dartmoor.
Apparently the only one of it's kind in England to have been completely restored and
used for its original purpose. Amazingly this is the work of just 6 exiled French monks
over a 30-year period; they must have had an incredible sense of purpose!
The inside is beautiful and at the far end there is a stained glass walled chapel
built in the late 1960's. Well worth a visit ... and the Dartmoor Railway,
otter sanctuary and butterfly house are only a mile or so away.
