One of the most-visited tors on Dartmoor, a couple of miles further on past Haytor, a visit to Hound Tor can make for quite a rewarding experience. It's a very popular place for families because the tor is under half a mile off the road. But if you're a hiker don't let that put you off visiting because it really is an interesting place with decent sized rocks and potential for basic climbing. There is a large car park and a reasonably easy ascent up a grass/heather covered slope into the dramatic rocks for people of all ages - including those who use a walking cane if they take it steady. On a fine day you'll get magnificent views from the top across the valley to Haytor. And on a day with low cloud you'll quickly appreciate how that strange looking rock might look like some kind of maleovolent hound in the mist..
