BURRATOR RESERVOIR - Dartmoor

Burrator Reservoir on the South Western edge of Dartmoor near Yelverton, finished in 1898 and expanded in 1929, has now nicely matured so that it has the ambience of a mountain lake with good sized trees and bushes coming right down to the water's edge. Surrounded by a dramatic backdrop of of forests and granite tors it is quite a beautiful place. Access is off the main Tavistock to Princetown road at Dousland from where it is just a mile or so down the lanes. Easy, level car parking there. It is worth taking a look at the lake from the far end (Arboretum). You can also walk across the main dam and then about a mile along the road until you see a gate on your left which leads in over a small secondary dam; it's nice and peaceful here and the views over the lake are magnificent. My shots were taken in early evening in the hope of the water being still for nice reflections. The lake has a quite different character at other times of the day.
