Mary Beth came into the galactic headquarters of John Cross Photography today for some portraits. It was an interesting afternoon. In the other photo from today I will explain further. This is the studio set up I am using. The flashes are Canon 580EX Speed lights. Not a lot of light, but enough to be useful. When I got to looking at this picture, I think I found out why I was getting weird reading from the strobes. You will note that the umbrella on the right has a much larger spot of light than the one on the left. At the beginning I set the manual folal length of both strobes to 105mm, thinking that concentrating the light would keep more of it from escaping. Later on I reset the one on the right to mwide angle because I was using it to illuminate a background. Well, as you can see, it is really concentrated on the left. I think that a lot of the reflection got blocked by the speedlight and the modeling lamp. I am going to play with that variable a little bit.
I know nothing about portrait photography, but a friend of mine did it for a living, for many years. I do remember him saying he never used flash, only fixed lights. Although he never explained why.
