I decided to set up my workspace in Robert's room. I had never used two screens before, and I was quite surprised how easy it was to implement. I recently got an Epson 4490 flat bed scanner and am still trying to get it to puke forth something useful from scanned film. So far film scanning has been a big disappointment.

Have you checked the section in the user's guide called "Puking Forth Something Useful"? I found success by connecting a fratostatic collimator in parallel with Epson's psionic reverter (bought pre-owned!). I got this straight from DeBroglie's "Recherches sur la Théorie de la Puque." Trust me.

Yup, without dedicated film scanner you don't get near what you want.
I find it better to use a copy rig and shoot the negs with digital camera.
