Olduvai Gorge became world‑renowned largely through the work of Louis and Mary Leakey, the pioneering paleoanthropologists whose excavations there in the mid‑20th century transformed our understanding of human origins. In 1959, Mary Leakey discovered the skull of Australopithecus boisei (“Nutcracker Man”), a breakthrough that drew global attention. Soon after, the Leakeys uncovered remains of Homo habilis, one of the earliest known toolmakers, along with stone tools from the Oldowan industry. Their decades of fieldwork established Olduvai as a cornerstone of human evolutionary research, showing that Africa was the birthplace of humankind.
