The world's first human-to-human heart transplant was performed on 3 December 1967 by South African surgeon Dr Christiaan Barnard at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. We visited the Heart of Cape Town Museum at thar hospital which included the actual operating theatre where the procedure took. This is a photo which includes mannequins of the team as well as quite a bit of the actual surgical equipment used at the time. We had a great tour. Our guide knew quite a few people involved as well as their children. Louis Washkansky, a 54-year-old grocer suffering from end-stage heart failure was the first recipient. He survived 18 days finally succumbing to double pneumonia.
