As I have mentioned several times before we have started to invest in equipment for our upcoming African safari. Our body choice was the Canon EOS R10, a mirrorless camera. I have been messing with it for three weeks and getting it set up like I want. We also bought the RF 100-400 and RF 24-240 lenses. I have been shooting the 100-400 almost all of the time. I have been wondering how good the 100-400 actually is. So I set up an experiment to compare it with my EF 100-400 L series lens. The target was my 18% gray card at 5.5 meters with both lenses at 400 mm. Another purpose was to test how noisy the R10 was with high ISO.

Todays photo is a comparison of a crop (972x1457 pixels, 1.4 megapixels out of a 24 mega pixel sensor) that is of the label on the card. My conclusion is that both lenses have about equivalent sharpness. I was expecting the worst with the RF so I was pleasantly surprised.

Both images were captured at ISO 10,000. You can see that is has quite a bit of noise. I experimented with Topaz and found the noise can be reduced significantly. This is important to me because I want to shoot in manual mode at 1/2000 for birds. Changing to the fast shutter speeds has greatly helped my success ratio.
