We have bought a couple of Canon EOS R10 cameras for our upcoming trip to Africa. We also got a couple of zoom telephotos. In this exercise today, I have the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM Lens mounted on the camera. I got to wondering how the weight compares to my previous rig, the Canon EOS 7D Mark 2 with the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens. The R10 rig is 2 pounds 7 3/8oz or 1.117 kg. The 7D rig is 5 pounds 13 oz or 2.632 kg. That is a difference of 3 pounds 5 1/2 oz or 1.515 kg. That is a big difference. Weight is at a premium for this trip hence the new equipment.

The big question is how does the performance compare. I am leaving that for more evaluation, but the critter pictures I recently posted (egret and anole) were quite good. More to come.

After a couple hours of chasing birds around in my backyard and at the local Audubon reservation, or at the track shooting race cars, my 90D with the Canon 100 - 400 like yours, feels like it's well over the 5+ pounds you measured. I think I'll bring my monopod when I try photographing a couple local sporting events. I considered going mirrorless back before my upgrade to the 90D, but I already had a couple EF mount lenses...
