Back in the good old days (1998) David and I set about putting together a collection of US coins. We got the "Red Book" which was a collectors guide to issues and prices. This was just three years after eBay got started. We did tons of searching. The idea was to collect as many varieties as possible without breaking the piggy bank (which is easy to do.) David still has the collection.
