I went to my favorite adult beverage store this afternoon. I have been a Specs customer for a very long time. I like to go Saturday afternoon because they are handing out samples of various things. Today it was all vodka and one Irish whiskey. Honestly, once something has been five times distilled there is hardly any flavor left in it. Vodka is a popular beverage for a micro-distillery because you can distill it today and sell it tomorrow. No aging required.

I was walking around looking at the whisk(e)y choices and came upon this, Edradour oloroso cask matured, cask strength, 10 years old and single barrel. A few comments: (1) It is only a 700 ml bottle for $160. Very expensive for my taste. (2) It is a single cask "specially selected for Specs Texas" (that's us) (3) there were only 670 bottles from that barrel. (4) There were about a dozen different varieties of Edradour in different color containers, but all "specially selected for Specs Texas" and very expensive. (5) There is no way in hell that I am going to buy a bottle of this stuff.

Over the last few years there has been a giant proliferation of Scotch whisky hitting the shelves. Those marketing departments keep turning the dials and pouring out so many variants that nobody could ever sample them all. I like Scotch whisky but I stick to the tried and true varieties. Glenmorangie, The Glenlivet and MacAllan do just fine for me when I buy Scotch.

And so with that I went over to the bourbon aisle and snagged a handle of Jack Daniels.
