This is the day we left from Savaii, Samoa, and arrived in Hawaii yesterday. That date line thing, you know. The plane was late and we didn't drag into our hotel until 1:00 am or so. We did some touring on the real October 6 on Oahu. First stop was Hawaii's Plantation Village, a place where the different cultures coming to Hawaii were described. They came to work on the plantations, pineapple, rice and sugar. In the afternoon we visited the Hawaiian Mission Houses in downtown Honolulu. The mission there was established in 1820. These missionaries first established the written form of Hawaiian and started publishing in that language. King Kamehameha II was a big advocate of reading and the Hawaiians achieved a 70% literacy rate during his reign. Today's photo is of a printing press, a very important tool of the missionaries.
