Still pondering the role my Powershot SX70 will play in the future in my photography efforts. A couple days ago I set up a test out in the hangar office to compare the SX70 with the G5X Mk2. I finally got to looking around at them and seeing what I could see. The result wasn't unexpected. The G5X gave better noise control. It is all in the sensor size (both 20 MP) the G5X Mk2 is 116 square millimeters and the SX70 is 28 square millimeters. As you can see the G5X Mk2 (right) is much better.

So I got to thinking. I have had the SX70 since March. Are there any photos that are really good? Well, yes there are. Here and here. What makes them good enough is a combination of favorable shooting conditions and judicial application of Topaz. They are actually quite a bit sharper in full size, not the reduced 800 X 533 shots I post on pBase.

I can see that the SX70 will be satisfactory in good conditions where I want a lens longer that 120mm equivalent (the top of the range with the G5X Mk2). Those parameters don't very often crop up (excuse the pun) on our trips, but it is good to have the ability in the camera bag.
