After toting around lots of camera equipment we realized that we use our small G5X and G5X MkII almost exclusively on our travels. Only rarely do we ever wish to have a telephoto lens along. For that eventuality we tote about 25 pounds of equipment. After chatting with my friend Gordon (merriwolf) last year I decided to have a look for a new camera. He has a Nikon Coolpix P1000 Superzoom in his camera collection. He was very enthusiastic about it. I got to thinking about that. Canon has a superzoom called Powershot SX70 HS. As I looked into it more I decided to have a go at a small superzoom and chose the Canon product.
There were only three reasons for that choice. First, we have been a Canon family for over 55 years. My first SLR was a Canon FT/QL. Second, my experience with telephotos was that a 400 mm lens (640 on a cropped sensor like the 7D MKII) was enough focal length for me, so I really wasn't too interested in a very long lens. The canon is 21-1365 mm equivalent and the Nikon is 24-3000 mm equivalent. Third, the SX70 was quite a bit lighter than the Nikon (608g vs. 1415g). So I bought the Canon SX70 HS and Bob's your uncle.
The camera arrived today and I couldn't wait to get out and snap a few. I shot several scenes at both ends of the scale and hurried upstairs to Lightroom to see what I got. First crack out of the box I was impressed. Today's photo is a composite of the 21 mm view and the 1360 view of our backyard gate. Now to do lots of testing to see what I really have. Tomorrow it is airplanes.
