Day 6 August 29
It was a distillery day. I love visiting distilleries. There is a lot to making good whiskey and I learn something every time. Our first distillery tour in the US was to Jack Daniel in Lynchburg, Tennessee. That was in May of 2013. Since then we have seen a lot of distilleries and enjoyed every one. Our very first distillery tour was to The Glenlivet in Scotland. That was in 2010.
Today was the triumphant return to Jack Daniel Distillery. As is the case with most distillery tours, the guide was a lot of fun and very informative. One thing that I learned is that Frank Sinatra drank Jack Daniel's exclusively. They named a whiskey after him. It is unique because the barrels are grooved on the inside theoretically making more oak available to the whiskey. Works for me. We had that in our tasting. I didn't feel any special attraction to it. One that I did like was their No. 27. I had never seen it before. It tasted very nice. Very mild and flavorful. At the bottle shop afterward four bottles of No. 27 jumped into my hands. Tha was a quick $400.
The next stop was the Cascade Hollow Distilling Company where they make George Dickel. It was a small place, quite a contrast from Jack Daniel's where 80 gallons a minute flow out of the still. So the tour was pretty short. The tasting was fun. I ended up buying a couple bottles of the 13 year old bottled in bond at the bottle shop. It was inexpensive, so I am a little concerned. It was not among what we tasted. If it isn't too good, I guess I will have to make Manhattans with it. Or mint juleps.
The photo for today was taken at the Jack Daniel Visitor Center. After all our touring today we headed to Nashville for an eight night stay and get together with Ginny's cousins. Should be fun. The cool thing was that we got upgraded to a very nice suite for our stay. It pays to same at the same hotel chain all the time.
