We visited the Quincy mine in Hancock today. It was a huge mine during its operation 1846 to 1945. Our tour went underground through an adit on the 7th level. The mine had operations down to the 90th level which was 6225 feet below ground. The hoist followed the copper vein down at an angle and it was 9260 feet long. Pretty astonishing. Today's photo is of the hoist where you can see a water tank on the left which was used to dewater the mine and a man car on the right that took 30 miners down into the mine. I am not real sure I would like to ride that thing.
I am absolutely certain I would not like to ride that thing.
The main reason being in those days mine owners were pretty casual about looking after the safety of their miners.
That water tank is quite special, never seen anything like it.
I suppose the weight of the miners going down helps to pull the weight of the water going up.
