Day 6
Today we scratched a big item off the bucket list. It was a visit to the Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kill Devil Hills. Everybody knows the story of these intrepid first aviators. To see the actual location and see how far they flew is quite another. There are markers on the field showing the terminus of each of the four flights. There is also a replica launch rail that is exactly the same length and position as it was on December 17, 1903. Although others have come along and claimed to be the first to fly, there is no doubt in my mind that these guys were the first.

One of the most amazing photographs I have ever seen is the one of the first flight. It documented a moment in time that formed the basis of aviation as we know it. That photograph is in the middle of this composite. Here is some information about it. I urge you to read it because it is very interesting.

The photo graph was taken by John T. Daniels. It was the first time he operated a camera. The timing was excellent. The actual camera he used is on display at the Wright Brothers museum in Dayton, Ohio.

So today's photo is a composite. In the top one Ginny is standing where the flyer was in the photo. The big rock marks the spot where the flyer lifted off. The center is the famous photo of the first flight. The bottom is the camera used to take the center photo.

For me this was a thrilling day.

Cool. We've come a long way.
