It was a big day at the airport. We finally flew the Cessna 170. As I have mentioned sporadically, I pulled a top overhaul. That was a lot of work. That was finished about a year ago, but things happened to delay finishing the annual. So today was the day to fly it and break in the engine. I am very lucky to have Bloke available for the test flight. He is an experienced test pilot. In his Air Force days he was a pilot at Edwards Air Force base. My other hangar mate Rodney (a BUFF pilot) flew the chase plane and I went along with Rodney.
Bloke took lots of data and the engine performed very well. The cylinder head temperature (CHT) started high as expected then dropped down to normal quite quickly. The break in flights are conducted at maximum power. It is all about getting the rings seated. So in the end I can start flying it now. I am looking forward to that for sure.
