We had an interesting day. The local library sponsors trips for seniors (that would be us now days) to various places around the area. They do this about six times per year. Today we headed out north of Houston to Huntsville, TX. For all you non-Texans out there, Huntsville is a place where Sam Houston lived later in life. It is the location of Sam Houston State University. There is a very nice Sam Houston Memorial Museum there which includes several structures in which he lived. We had some very good guides who told us a lot about Sam and his adventures. He was a very active fellow who lived to the age of 70. He was born in Virginia. When we visited the Capitol in Richmond, we saw a bust of him in the old House of Representatives. He was the commander of the Texian Army when Santa Ana was defeated at San Jacinto and the Republic of Texas was established. One of his notable accomplishments was that he is the only person ever elected to be governor of two states: Tennessee and Texas.

There is a giant statue of Sam Houston along Interstate 45 which we have passed on numerous occasions. We went over there to have a visit at the end of the day. It was built by the citizens of Huntsville for the bicentennial of his birth in 1993. We had a great day.
