OK, my solid state drive finally arrived and I had a chance to play with it. It is 2 TB, which is a lot of capacity. It turned out to be a good news/bad news situation. The good news is that it is quite fast. It transferred files more than twice as fast as usual. Interesting, it does get quite hot when it is in use continuously for a while.
The bad news is that I haven't seen any real big improvement with Lightroom. I was expecting to see Lightroom load a lot faster. Baseline was 8 minutes. With the new drive it was 5 1/2 minutes. That was a little improvement, but not much. As I was doing the testing I was keeping an eye on Task Master to see what the disk usage was. When transferring files, it was quite high, about 40% or thereabouts. When loading Lightroom, it was only 2-3%. I learned something from that. The loading process must not suck much data into the program although it might suck in a bunch of teensy files. I don't know.
As you can see from the photo, the SSD is quite a bit smaller than the usual external drives. That should make it easier to transport. Additionally, there are no moving parts to get buggered up if it gets bumped. That is a good thing. I am going to be waiting another week or more for my new computer to arrive. Can't wait to try it out with the new SSD when it finally gets here. For me, setting up a new computer is a tedious process. If anybody out there has quick ways to get rid of bloatware and crapware, let me know.
