Our original plan for the day was to have a boat trip out to Baker Island. Unfortunately, the fog had settled in and the trip was cancelled. That wasn't good. So we came up with Plan B which was to drive around to the Schoodic Peninsula and check things out. There was nice scenery, of course. The interesting thing however was a former Navy signals base (NSGA Winter Harbor) which was in use from 1935 until 2002. From what I could gather from the displays it was a signals intercept station as well as a direction finding station. They probably did all manner of code work as well. The building was very interesting. It was a mixture of rock and brick construction. That is today's photo.
We drove around a little bit then headed back to Bar Harbor. There was a 4:00 pm mass in town so we decided to attend that one. There were perhaps a hundred people at the service. The father asked for the residents of Bar Harbor to raise their hands. There were only about ten residents in the pews. I liked this mass especially because it lasted 48 minutes, but who is counting.
