March 13, 2016

Today started daylight savings time. So we lose an hour of sleep. I planned to go to church at the 7am service at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. And that worked out just fine. When I left the church to go back to the house to change clothes, I discovered that there was a marathon being run. I was land locked. I couldn't get back home. To make matters worse, the streets in Lafayette are laid out in a curvy manner so that you can't just try and end run when you don't know the territory. So I said the heck with it and stopped into a McDonalds for a sausage biscuit and a coke and just waited them out.

I headed down to St. Martinville to Longfellow Evangeline State Park. St. Martinville is supposed to be part of the story of Evangeline in Longfellow's epic poem. I never read the book. I guess it all started when two lovers were separated on their wedding day in Nova Scotia by those reprehensible British in 1755. I am pretty sure it was downhill from there. One thing St. Martinville has is the Acadian Memorial. It is a tribute to French settlers who came here starting in 1764. There is a wall with the names of the original settlers, and many locals can trace their lineage to those people. I can't. Of course.

I stopped next at Lake Martin to have a look at the egret rookery. There were lots of egrets, but they were a long way from the shore. Certainly not a photo opportunity. I did try to take some photos of the swamp. There were neat shadows among the cypress trees. I fooled with that for a while and that is where today's photo came from.

After Le Grand Derangement, it is hard to
imagine any french person in Louisiana not
taking up arms against the British.

A little know Acadian fact. If the Acadians capitulated to the Brits the French RC priests informed them they would be excommunicated. Leaving them between a rock and a major hard place. On the upside we now have Zydeco and Creole cuisine. Always I enjoy your travels and notes.
