We had a great day. We had to drive about an hour to Skaftafell National Park and we joined up with a group for a four hour glacier walk. We had to gear up with crampons and ice axes. At the start I though this was a bit overdone, but once on the glacier it was evident that you were not going anywhere unless you had the proper gear. The highlite of the walk was visiting an ice cave. That was a bucket list item for me. The guides had just discovered it a few days ago, and now it is part of the walk. It was very beautiful.
We had some lunch then Ginny (she who must be obeyed) said I wanted to see another waterfall. It was quite a hike with a lot of uphill going in. The waterfall, Svartifoss, turned out to be interesting to me. It comes off a cliff composed of basalt columns and the whole area is loaded with basalt. For some reason, I like basaltic structures. In this particular case, the waterfall was playing second fiddle to the terrific rocks.
We were quite weary after all that adventure so we headed back to Hotel Geirland with a stop for gas and some groceries. This was a good day. One of the best travel days we haver ever had. We still have three more weeks in Iceland. Life is good.
