We started out our first day in St. John's with a visit to the Railway Coastal Museum. It was very interesting. I had no idea that the same company, later government agency, ran the trains and the coastal ferry boats. Also didn't know that there is no railroad operating in Newfoundland. It was abandoned in 1988. I am sure there are interesting stories about that situation.
In the afternoon we went to Bay Bulls for a whale watching and puffin watching voyage. The weather wasn't great, but at least it wasn't raining. We did happen upon a Minke whale. Unlike the Humpback whales, the Minke never shows its fluke. We went to Gull Island in Witless Bay and had a nice view of quite a few birds. Of course, everybody wants to see the puffins, and they were plentiful. I had fun playing with my 100-400 and Mk3. Ginny was messing around with her new telephoto zoom. Practice helps a lot.
